The Hon’ble Health Minister officially inaugurated ten Mobile Medical Units (MMU) vehicles (out of the total of 29), marking a significant milestone in Bhutan’s efforts to enhance healthcare access across the country. The vehicles are set to be deployed to selected health facilities bringing essential medical services closer to communities, particularly in remote and hard-to-reach areas.
The procurement of these MMUs aims to strengthen outreach health services and ensure equitable access to quality healthcare for all. By bringing medical care directly to communities, the MMUs are expected to improve early diagnosis, treatment, and preventive care, reducing barriers for populations living far from traditional health facilities.
The MMUs will provide services such as NCD screening, outpatient consultations, Maternal and Child Healthcare (MCH), Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services, as well as health advocacy and promotion activities.
The 10 MMU vehicles will be deployed to the following health facilities: Trashigang Hospital, Samtse Hospital, Yebilaptsa Hospital, Wangdue Phodrang Hospital, Haa Hospital, Samdrup Jongkhar Hospital, Trongsa Hospital, Lhuentse Hospital, Pema Gatshel Hospital, and the Eastern Regional Referral Hospital in Mongar.
The Ministry of Health expresses gratitude to the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific (JFPR) and the Asian Development Bank for their support in procuring MMUs to strengthen healthcare delivery across Bhutan.
