The Department of Public Health, Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Paro Dzongkhag Health Sector and Traditional Medicine Services, conducted a Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) awareness program in Paro, engaging approximately 300 students and staff from Drugyel Higher Secondary School.
The program highlighted key modifiable risk factors for NCDs, with a strong emphasis on promoting healthy lifestyle practices. Students were sensitized on lead poisoning and prevention, the harmful effects of tobacco use, smoking, and e-cigarettes, as well as excessive salt intake, junk food consumption, and sugar-sweetened beverages. They were encouraged to adopt healthier behaviors from an early age to reduce future health risks.
A key highlight of the session was the active participation of students in making personal pledges to avoid smoking and the use of e-cigarettes, reduce unhealthy food consumption, and limit salt and sugar intake. They also committed to promoting healthier habits within their families and communities. This initiative aimed to nurture youth champions who can drive positive behavioral change beyond the school setting.
The program aligns with Bhutan’s ongoing national efforts to prevent and control NCDs through early awareness, community engagement, and multi-sectoral collaboration, contributing to a healthier and more informed future generation.
