During his first term as Health Minister from 2013 to 2017, he led transformative initiatives that strengthened Bhutan’s health system and expanded access to essential services. Under his leadership, Bhutan achieved the historic elimination of measles and significantly curtailed the transmission of rubella—milestones that underscored his strategic vision and decisive governance in public health.

His foresight laid the groundwork for Bhutan’s electronic patient information system and introduced innovative diagnostic tools for infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. These advancements have played a critical role in modernizing Bhutan’s healthcare infrastructure and improving service efficiency.

His continued leadership reflects a deep-rooted dedication to health systems strengthening, innovation, and inclusive policy-making. Minister Wangchuk is a steadfast advocate for equitable and quality healthcare and is deeply committed to advancing the health and well-being of all Bhutanese citizens.

Minister Wangchuk currently serves as the Alternate Board Member on the Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance Board, contributing to global immunization efforts and health equity. He is the Chairman of the Bhutan Health Trust Fund, where he oversees strategic initiatives to ensure sustainable financing for essential vaccines and medicines in Bhutan.

In addition to these roles, he chairs the Governing Council of the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB), guiding academic and institutional development in the country’s premier medical university. He also leads as Chairman of the Governing Council of the Bhutan Food and Drug Authority (BFDA), ensuring regulatory oversight and public health standards in food and pharmaceutical sectors.
